Where Is This Hand-Built Wheel Now?

When someone from out of town asks for a hand-built wheel,
I can’t help but imagine what kind of bike it’s going on and how they’re planning to ride it.

Rim, hub, spokes, nipples—
it’s such a simple structure made of just four elements, yet wheels are where personality shows the most.

We got another great order this time, so let me share it with you.

This combo… there’s no way you land on it after just a few months of riding.
I figured the customer must be a real veteran.

Thin rim? Then maybe the frame is steel.
To make that purple hub pop, the bike’s probably in a simple black.
And if they’re using gold nipples on top of that… NJS?

Alright, that’s it.
It’s a black, skinny-tubed, steel NJS frame.
That’s the “textbook” way of thinking, anyway.

But fixed-gear riders love to throw in something unexpected, don’t they?

I’m probably completely wrong.
Now I’m even more curious what kind of bike this wheel is going on.

I’ve said it a million times, but thin rims × low-flange hubs × gold nipples—
that combo is one of my absolute favorites.

How would you make the most of this wheel?

Still, picking parts is tough, right?
Or rather, there are so many options that it feels impossible to reach a “correct” answer.

Say there are 20 rims, 15 hubs, 15 spokes, 10 nipple colors.
Even with simple math: 20 × 15 × 15 × 10 = 45,000 combinations.

And from those 45,000, I want the one you choose to be the wheel—your masterpiece.
Once you pick the parts, leave the rest to us. We’ll deliver it in perfect condition.

These days you can look up anything, so go ahead and research the parts on your own.
But I kind of miss the old days—saving a blurry picture, zooming in like crazy, trying to find a tiny logo somewhere…

“Nope, way too grainy! Can’t read anything!”
That era had its charm.

Now it’s all AI-something merging with something-something,
some kind of “fusion aesthetics” or whatever.
Feels shallow. Way too shallow.

So then what’s the real deal?

Naturally, we recommend all the parts we carry, and we select them with confidence.
But each staff member, as a fixed-gear rider themselves, has their own actual riding preferences.

Like—“lighter isn’t always better,” for example.

If there is a right answer, it’s this:
Dig deep, day after day, follow your own instincts, and choose the parts that speak to you.

That’s the real right answer.
