The Prestige of NJS Frames

Bike frameAh, the allure of an NJS frame!

NJS, which stands for the Nihon Jitensha Shinkōkai (or the "Japan Bicycle Promotion Association"), is a pivotal figure in the history of bicycle culture, significantly boosting the fixed gear movement. Equipment used in these high-stakes races—where racers put pride and their livelihoods on the line—must meet the highest performance and safety standards.

Have you ever noticed parts engraved with the NJS logo?

What Are NJS Certified Parts?

These are NJS-certified components, crafted to stringent standards set by the Japan Keirin Association to ensure fair and safe racing. Every part, from frames to smaller components, used in professional keirin racing must be NJS certified, signifying top-tier global quality and exceptional craftsmanship.

While most of us aren't competing, it's worth noting that NJS-certified parts are built to withstand the rigors of intense racing. Even if you're just a fan of their design, using these parts is beneficial for their guaranteed quality and durability.

A typical example available for everyday use is the "HKK Vertex Chain," which proudly bears the NJS mark.

NJS Panasonic Box Logo Gold (CT-510) Frame Set ¥96,800-

This frame features a sleek black and gold design with a rare box logo. Its CT 510 size means it's accessible to many riders. I must confess, it's caught my eye, too!

NJS Frame vs. Standard Frames

There are a couple of subtle but important differences between typical frames and NJS-certified ones:"

Brake Mounts

NJS frames do not come with brake mount holes because they are designed solely for track use, where brakes aren't necessary. To legally use these frames on public roads, you would need to add a brake mount.

Welding

NJS frames often utilize lugged welding, a method involving the joining of tubes with lugs. This adds intricate detailing and strength, a hallmark of high-quality craftsmanship.

For comparison, even some high-quality standard frames, like the "Barcelona" from Dosnoventa, employ lugged welding, indicating their superior build. Dosnoventa is indeed a testament to craftsmanship.

I decided to customize Panasonic's NJS frame with some Harajuku flair.

We've customized this Panasonic NJS frame in a style reminiscent of Harajuku.

"Your Bike, Your Rules

Fixed gear bikes are all about freedom and personal expression. There are no rules on how to build your bike with an NJS frame. If you think it looks cool, that's all that matters. Stay true to your core, don't follow the crowd, and build a bike you feel is the coolest."
