Today, let's dive into the world of pedals. Given that pedals are the main contact point with your feet, everyone has their preference—be it grip, ease of detachment, size, rotation, flat versus plate, clips versus straps. It's a part that easily reflects one's personal taste, much like how hands have a preference for how they hold things.
Pedals are relatively easy to swap out, making them a perfect customization for those new to fixed gear bikes or anyone looking to add a bit of personal flair without much hassle.
If you're riding fixed gear, it's essential, I'd say mandatory, to use parts that secure your feet to the pedals. There are mainly three styles to consider:
・Pedal Straps
・Toe Clips & Straps
・Clipless Pedals
Pedal Straps
Pedal straps have been a staple for quite some time now. Used with MTB or BMX flat pedals, these thick fabric straps have evolved from a trick-focused style to the most common choice. They offer a strong hold while being easy to slip in and out of, minimizing the risk of tipping over because your foot got stuck. Plus, with minimal size restrictions, you can ride in your favorite shoes, making it an accessible option for many.

Toe Clips
Toe clips and straps are a more traditional style and are still used in track cycling today. They were the go-to during the fixed gear boom in the late 2000s, and many, myself included, still prefer this setup. Toe clips ensure your feet are always in the right position, eliminating the forward-backward movement you might get with pedal straps. Though they might have some drawbacks, like potential interference with the front wheel and less flexibility in size adjustment, you'll hardly notice these once you're used to them.MKS MASH STREAM WIDE
For toe clips, you'll want compatible pedals, with MKS being a popular choice. Starting with something with a bit of a kickback can make things easier.
MKS FIT-α Sports NJS Double Straps
Choose clips that fit the shoes you wear most often, but when it comes to straps, I recommend going for quality. Cheaper options might not hold as well, so something sturdy and less prone to stretching, like those used in track cycling, would be ideal.
Lastly, let's talk about clipless systems. Pairing clipless shoes with pedals might have more restrictions, but the payoff is significant. It's a setup that allows for a simpler, faster ride, perfect for those chasing speed. With events like CMWC and sfiDARE CRIT on the horizon, anyone interested in racing should definitely give it a try.
