Lately, soccer jerseys have become trendy fashion items, right? I was just thinking about getting one myself, but it's tough to choose with so many cool options out there. I'd love to rock a legend's jersey—someone like Ibrahimović or Balotelli. Just wearing one would make me feel invincible! If you've got any recommendations, let me know.
When it comes to legends with iconic hairstyles, my top choice would have to be Puyol from Barcelona. Anyway, it's Kick here. As the title suggests, we've just received our second "Cinelli × Mash" frame of 2024, and this time, it's a pre-owned model. To celebrate, we've put together a custom bike build to show it off!
The Cinelli × Mash Work Frame
The centerpiece of this build is the "Cinelli × Mash Work" frame! It's no secret that many of you have been searching for this frame—and for good reason. Developed by Cinelli in collaboration with Mash's original member, Chas Christiansen, the "Work" was Mash's first chromoly frame. This frame, true to its name, reflects Christiansen's lifestyle as a messenger, which has made it a favorite among riders since its debut.
When it first launched, the "Work" frame flew off the shelves, and now it's back at our Kichijoji store as a pre-owned model! The frame's slightly higher bottom bracket height is perfect for the aggressive riding style Mash is known for. It also offers clearance for tires up to 35C and can accommodate V-brakes and cantilever brakes, making it versatile enough for off-road adventures or commuting with a rack and basket. This frame adapts to your lifestyle, effortlessly showing off its many faces!
Beyond its functional versatility, the frame's design is a work of art. The raw finish, complete with heat treatment marks and even a touch of rust, adds character, giving it a rugged, relaxed look. The frame is available in the popular size C-T 540 and comes with a Chris King headset.
This frame is currently available at our Kichijoji store, so feel free to visit us or reach out with any questions! It's a frame that's worth seeing in person.
Chris King Headset
I've lost count of how many times I've praised Chris King headsets, but they are the best. Headsets endure a lot of stress from the vibrations and impacts during rides, and when you have a versatile frame like the "Work," you need a headset that can handle anything. Manufactured entirely in-house, Chris King headsets are known for their exceptional durability and precision, helping you get the most out of your bike.
Make it a Complete Set with These Parts
Wheels: H Plus Son The Hydra × Phil Wood High Flange Track Hub
To complement the frame's wide clearance, we've paired it with a wheelset that accommodates thicker tires. For this build, we chose Continental Gatorskin 32C tires.
H Plus Son The Hydra Rims
The rims are H Plus Son The Hydra, featuring a slightly wider 25mm profile and a high-profile design. These rims can handle a variety of tire sizes and are compatible with clincher and tubeless tires, making them ideal for everyday use and even cyclocross. Plus, they're priced similarly to H Plus Son's AT-25 or SL-42 rims (a little over 10,000 yen), making them a great value.
Phil Wood High Flange Track Hubs
The hubs are Phil Wood High Flange Track Hubs, renowned for their excellent rotational performance and durability. Phil Wood hubs are a favorite among track racers and street riders worldwide. The variety of color options and flange heights they offer is always a plus. For this build, we selected the high flange for its striking presence. Pairing a sleek frame with bold wheels is always a winning combination, don't you think?
While all-black wheels are undeniably cool, we went with silver spokes for a bit of contrast this time. One of the best things about custom-built wheels is the ability to choose your spoke and nipple colors to create something truly unique. Even if you only have a rough idea, we're happy to help you design your perfect wheelset!
Crankset: Sugino SG75 Criterium Set
The Sugino SG75 crankset is a Made in Japan masterpiece, with a stellar track record in both Japanese Keirin and international track racing. Amidst the rise of direct cranks and aerodynamic disc-shaped cranks, the slim and elegant design of the SG75 remains a rare gem. With its high precision and rigidity, the SG75 is our go-to recommendation for anyone unsure of which crankset to choose. The Criterium Set includes SG75 crank arms, a chainring, and a cartridge-style bottom bracket, making it an excellent value for anyone looking to upgrade their crankset.
Handlebar: Nitto For Shred Bar
The Nitto For Shred Bar boasts moderate rise and the reliable durability of being Made in Japan. This riser bar is a top choice for riders looking for something that's easy to control, whether for commuting, tricks, or racing. Its simple yet glossy finish pairs perfectly with the other components we've selected for this build.
Stem: Thomson Elite X4 Stem
Seatpost: Thomson Elite Seatpost
We've kept the brand consistent with the stem and seatpost from Thomson. Known for their precision CNC machining, Thomson products are crafted from solid aluminum blocks, making them incredibly precise. Originally designed for MTB use, Thomson components are perfect for every day and more intense rides. The glossy CNC finish pairs beautifully with the Nitto riser bar.
Thomson also offers a range of options, allowing you to select the stem length and angle and choose between a straight or setback seatpost. Remember, adjusting your stem's length or angle can be just as effective as swapping handlebars when finding your ideal riding position.
A Custom Build That's Ready for Anything
This time, we've built a versatile custom bike using the "Cinelli × Mash Work" frame—perfect for everything from city rides to more challenging terrain. The "Work" frame remains popular for a reason.
