As the New Year spirit gradually fades, our Yokohama store returns to its usual buzz. A heartfelt thanks to everyone for sticking with us into 2024! Today's blog is all about my top part picks for 2024.
Talking endlessly about the merits of parts can be ineffective. Not everyone is performance-obsessed, especially for city rides. Some, like me, value uniqueness and style. Therefore, getting recommendations from staff who use or are interested in these parts is a no-brainer. So, here are three components I’ve personally found to be exceptional.
IZUMI SUPER TOUGHNESS KAI
First up, a part I've always recommended: the chain. Though not the most glamorous, it's as vital as tires due to its rapid wear. While I advocate for cost-effective options, for those bothered by stretch or noise, the KAI CHAIN is a must-try. Detailed specs are available online, but in essence, it boasts durability and incredibly smooth engagement with the chainring.
Since switching to the KAI CHAIN, my roughly 20km commute has been stress-free for over six months, with no stretching or noise. It’s like a magic elixir for drivetrain noise!
TUFO Calibra Plus
Next is this tire, known for being lightweight and cost-effective. With the evolution of tires, choosing a decent one has become crucial to avoid ride stress, but the cost can be a deterrent. TThat's where TUFO CALIBRA comes in. Its lightness and performance have been impressive, and at about ¥6,000, it’s perfect for carefree skidding. If there's a tire that's perfect for fixed gear bikes, this is it. Tires are definitely worth experimenting with, so give these a try and see for yourself.
SUGINO SG75 Crank
Last on the list is the crank. Even our Osaka store manager and Fujimon recommend it. Currently, I’ve lent my 75 crank to our mechanic, Kazumura, and recently had the opportunity to ride his bike equipped with the 75-crankset. I was genuinely impressed by how light the pedal strokes felt.
Apart from its practical uses, the thing that really stands out about it is its visual appeal. Matching perfectly with slender chromoly frames and even Kazumura’s 735TR. Despite the price, the quality and beauty are worth the investment. Definitely consider it if you’re curious!
