A project called "Support Your Local Fixie Shop" that travels around the world riding and having a blast with fixed gear riders everywhere, based on the simple common bond of loving fixed gear bikes.
This time, we visited Mexico City (CDCX) in Latin America.
Mexico, which borders the United States, has blended the vibes of California with Spanish history and aesthetics, and continually evolving its own original street culture.
CDCX, also known as one of the most challenging places to drive in the world, has unique traffic rules and a fast-paced flow. Although bike lanes are gradually increasing, fixed gear riders are required to a high level of skill for riding in downtowns.
On top of that, CDCX is located over 2,200 meters above sea level - comparable to the fifth station of Mt. Fuji - meaning that, riders are constantly facing low oxygen conditions compared to Japan. It's a field that tests both their skills and physical endurance. If you are confident to have got what it takes, you should definitely give it a try!
We teamed up with Oscar(IG: @mensajerodelmal), leader of the Terremoto Crew and the Slow Squad's Mexico section, and Sal(IG: notsallombroso), founder of LEADER®︎ and TYRANT BIKES, to throw a Fixed Gear Event where we could ride and have a blast with Mexico's hardcore fixed gear riders.
The event took place at "Linda Vista", a craft beer bar where CDCX fixed gear riders gather. It's a cool tap bar where you get a discount on beer if you are arrive by bike. This time, we brought in beer from Barbarick WORKS in Chigasaki, Kanagawa Pref - a brewery with strong ties to BROTURES - took over the bar, and threw an epic party.
Alley Cat Race
As soon as the race started, riders followed a manifest six checkpoints listed, strategizing their own routes to complete the alley cat race. The fastest rider completed it in about 90 min despite the considerable distance.
Foot Down
In this fixie game, riders move slowly in a one-way of circle, gradually tightening the circle and reducing their speed, to see what can stay on their bike the longest without putting a foot down.
Standing Game
A simple game where riders, while doing a track stand, try to either lift a beer keg, and grab a flyer placed on the ground. It turned out to be surprisingly difficult and got the crowed more hyped than anything else!
Since it was BROTURES' first event in Latin America, riders and friends came not only from all over Mexico, but also from Canada, the United States, and Japan. I think it really helped fire up the fixed gear scene in Mexico.
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
Speaking of Mexico, it's the birthplace of tequila and mezcal.
To toast with the local riders, we brought special shot grasses made featuring a Japanese Daruma design. With the help of craftsmen and artist from Kutani ware in Ishikawa Pref, we were able to prepare these unique items.
They will be available in limited quantities on our online store, so be sure to check them out!
BROTURES DARUMA SHOT GLASS $35.00 USD
We also have a limited number of event T-shirts, silk-screened by Oscar, now in stock
The pop-up event is still ongoing, so be sure to check the information for updates!
